Who fights for individuals whose lives are put at risk?

Ray Boucher,
that’s who.

A Trial Lawyer’s Worldview Formed Early

Raymond Boucher’s commitment to justice did not begin in a courtroom. It began decades earlier, shaped by the civil rights movements and moral leadership that defined a turbulent era in American history.

Now the founder and senior partner at Boucher LLP, Raymond, often called “Ray,” grew up in Massachusetts watching leaders like the Kennedys challenge injustice and stand alongside vulnerable communities. Those moments left a lasting imprint on how he understood fairness, responsibility, and the role of the law.

“I was attracted to the law at a young age,” notes Ray. “Watching Bobby Kennedy fight for Cesar Chavez and the Farm Workers Union, fight segregation in the South, and take on environmental injustice – it was something that truly inspired me.”

What resonated most was the idea that the law could be used not simply to resolve disputes, but to correct what felt deeply unfair – and to protect people who had little power of their own.

Following a Moral Compass in the Pursuit of Justice

Throughout his career, Ray saw practicing law as more than just strategy. Consequently, his methods are grounded in empowerment, authenticity, and empathy.

“I think the most important quality to have as a trial lawyer is authenticity – being true to yourself and listening to your moral compass,” he notes.

That moral compass guides how Ray approaches every case and client, particularly when representing individuals who have been harmed and lack the resources or influence to legally stand up for themselves. His Los Angeles, California–based trial law firm, Boucher LLP, handles complex civil litigation involving class actions, mass torts, sexual abuse, assault and harassment, and more.

As a result, his clients are often undergoing emotional and legal turmoil, further diminishing their agency and voice. That’s where Ray steps in.

“We stand at the bar of justice and provide a voice for people who are voiceless, who can’t and don’t have the capacity to stand up for themselves,” says Ray.

When Courage Demands Accountability

As a civil litigator, Ray has witnessed extraordinary courage from clients who chose to come forward despite knowing the personal risks involved. That bravery is what inspires Ray to dig deep despite the challenges of trial work.

“There were so many cases in my career [that caused me to] shake my head in awe of the courageous clients that came forward to do the right thing,” recalls Ray.

One such case involved a young woman who witnessed a violent crime in her neighborhood. Rather than look away, she did what the justice system depends on ordinary citizens to do: come forward and speak to law enforcement.

While the police initially ignored her account, they requested she testify after another crime occurred in her neighborhood.

Despite concerns about her safety, the woman was given verbal reassurance by the police, but not physical protection. They failed to provide meaningful safeguards on her behalf; as a result, she received a death threat because she agreed to be a witness against two notorious brothers in South Central Los Angeles. Yet, even with her life in danger, she continued to cooperate – choosing truth over silence in a system that failed to protect her.

Unfortunately, the cost of that courage was devastating.

“The day before she was scheduled to testify, she was shot and killed in front of her house,” Ray remembers.

Her tragic murder revealed a critical breakdown in how witnesses and victims of violent crime were treated – a system that relied on bravery without providing security.

Seeking Justice That Can Change Failed Systems

That harrowing case made clear that asking witnesses to come forward without protection was not only unjust, but also dangerous. Fortunately, Ray’s fight for justice didn’t stop there.

“It took several years of fighting. We went to trial. During trial, the judge took the case and dismissed it, making it go up on appeal,” explains Ray, who ultimately won the appeal. “But now there’s an official decision – the Wallace decision – that protects people who are victims and witnesses of violent crime in LA.”

The Wallace decision established new obligations to warn and protect witnesses and victims of violent crime, fundamentally changing how these cases are handled.

“One of the most gratifying parts of being a lawyer is when you get to be a part of a substantial change, moving the law to be more just,” says Ray.

Today, those protections exist because one woman had the courage to speak and because trial lawyers were willing to push the system to change.

“There are now rules throughout California…where [law enforcement] has to warn or protect those who are witnesses and victims of violent crime. And that’s something pretty special,” Ray states.

“If we do our job correctly, it has a ripple effect. That pebble in the water…it affects the family and the community and helps all of them heal.”

Standing With Workers Lacking Protection

Long before his most visible cases, Ray’s commitment to justice took shape while advocating for farmworkers. Though farmworkers are an integral part of society, they are often exposed to working conditions deemed unsafe, unregulated, and ignored.

“When I became a lawyer, one of my first experiences was working with Cesar Chavez and the [United Farm Workers Union] because my firm represented them pro bono in strike violence cases,” recalls Ray. “[Chavez was] changing the world through these great boycotts, which were necessary to enforce partially humane conditions for those working in the fields to feed us.”

Through that work, Ray saw firsthand the physical risks farmworkers faced: long hours, exposure to toxic pesticides, and a lack of basic medical safeguards.

One case Ray remembers vividly involved a farmworker poisoned by pesticides after working in the fields the morning after chemicals were sprayed on the crops.

Rather than receiving prompt medical treatment, the worker was left without care as critical time passed.

What could have been a simple intervention for organophosphate poisoning turned into a deadly cover-up. Instead of taking the poisoned worker to a medical facility to receive treatment through a reversing agent – a medicine that could have saved his life – his employers threw him into the back of a van, drove him three hours south to Tijuana, Mexico, and dumped him.

Acknowledging the heinous injustice, Ray was poised to hold the company accountable for its transgressions.

“I had the honor of representing the worker’s family,” remembers Ray. “Ultimately, we were able to [secure] a resolution after a lot of litigation, making a difference in the lives of that family.”

The case illustrates the vulnerability of farmworkers, and how some companies treat them as disposable. Although legal constraints limited the outcome, the work brought corporate accountability and meaningful relief to the family.

Fueling the Pursuit of Justice

Taking on powerful institutions and complex litigation requires more than legal skill. It requires perseverance, resources, and partners who understand what is at stake. That’s why Ray and his law firm decided to partner with Esquire Bank.

“With Esquire, one of the beautiful things is that it’s not a bank. It’s a partnership,” Ray says. “[Esquire] is made up of people who come from the legal profession and understand what it is to be a trial lawyer; the risks that we take, the amount of effort and energy that goes into it, and the resources that we need to accomplish the justice that we’re seeking.”

That partnership helps ensure all Boucher LLP teams can remain focused on their purpose – standing up for people when systems fail them. Now, after more than four decades in practice, Ray remains deeply committed to the purpose behind the profession.

“Justice is elusive, but when you get to be a part of the system that actually results in justice, it’s so powerful. It brings so much light,” notes Ray.

At its core, the efforts of trial lawyers like Ray are focused on restoring dignity and amplifying voices that might otherwise go unheard.

“The best we can do is allow them to have a voice – to let that whisper become a roar, and to bring that roar to a place where change takes place.”
